Santa Claus

The character of Santa Claus is well known by many names and is no less than a mystical figure for many children all over the world. Like Snowman, Santa Claus occupies a formidable position. Over the ages, Santa Claus is portrayed as a kind, round-bellied old man, bespectacled and dressed in a red coat trimmed with white fur that loves children and is said to bring gifts and sweets for them on the night of Christmas Eve. The legend of Santa Claus is believed to originate from the Dutch folk tale based on the historical character of Saint Nicholas, who was a bishop of Myra, and used to help the needy and the suffering. Different countries hold their own view point regard Santa Claus in their own way as some believe that Santa Claus deeply resembles with the Russian character of Ded Moroz who delivers presents to children.

The coming of popular Santa Claus is indicative of a great arrival, as he rides through a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer from house to house to give presents to children, enters each house, through chimney and exits through the fireplace. Santa Claus is known in different countries in different names as Weihnachtsmann in Germany, Pere Noel in France, Sinter Claus in the Dutch, Julemanden in Denmark and Joulupukki in Finland. In fact he is also known as Father Christmas in many countries and Santa robe is a craze among little children.

There are certain traditional beliefs and rituals connected with the advent of Santa. The decoration of Santa Claus in Christmas has become synonymous with the celebration itself. Also from time to time different kinds of rituals have evolved like the tradition of leaving tasty foodstuffs, cookies, and mince pies for Santa Claus with the hope that he would good presents and lovely gifts. This ritual is particularly followed by little children who see him as gift bringer. Also especially designed Santa Hat is widely preferred by children. Thus, Santa Claus is looked forward as an incarnation of love, affection and kindness since his appearance ushers in an ambiance of unrivaled joy and happiness.
